Hare Response To Falsification Flashcards
What is R.M Hare response to falsification?
He explains religious statements as meaningful
R.M Hare: ‘Bliks’
What is bliks ?
Lens you have of framework of interpretation to see the world so your world view you have and your interpretation and experience everything through that lens
- tells you how to interpret the world, way of seeing things, non cognitive for meaningful religious statements
R.M Hare: ‘Bliks’
What does blik link to ?
Psychology: schema
R.M Hare: ‘Bliks’
What is psychology link :schema ?
We have framework in our mind of how we see the world shaped by our upbringing, childhood experience and taught by parents and upbringing we experience the world differently
R.M Hare: ‘Bliks’
What is an example a blik ?
Christians see the world differently to Hindu due to different lens/framework of world affects how make sense of the world us and what it means
What does R.M Hare say about bliks
Can be good or bad
What example does RM hare use for bliks being good or bad ?
Example of parable of a lunatic
R.M Hare: ‘Bliks’ can be good or bad
What is the parable of the lunatic
- So a lunatic is convinced that all Oxford university lectures want to murder him IN HIS LENS
- so his friend decides to introduce him to the nicest/respected lectures to prove that he is wrong
- lunatic says they’re a pretending to be nice and still want to kill him
- must be another explanation
- hare says lunatic is deluded and no behaviour can show lunatic to be wrong or falsify his beliefs
- SO LUNATIC HAS A BLIK that all lectures want to murder him shaping way HE interprets WORLD to fix him lens
Overall argument of hare
- religious statement should no be falsified because it’s a blik/lens/framework of interpretation meaningful to those who believe
- so flew cannot make theist see differently
- religious statements not meaningless but a blik
3 strengths of bliks by RM HARE
- Analogy is successful and works and a strong case
- Allows religious language to be meaningful influencing people’s lives
- Consistent with cognitive psychology, mental framework as each person interpret things in world differently
What are the 2 weakness of Bliks by RM HARE
1.Richard Dawkins: says what is the difference between blik and brainwashing as teaching belief with no evidence by upbringing
2. If religious statements are bliks then cannot be proven true or false as beyond facts and subjective on understanding as non cognitive
What is the difference between flew and hare
Flew : religious statements are meaningless - assertion of the world and cognitive and factual so non falsifiable
Hare : religious statements are meaningful, non cognitive and non factual
