Kapitel 5 - the perceiving mind Flashcards
Absolute Threshold
The smallest amount of stimulation that is detectable
(seeing a light from a candle flame 30 miles away on a dark night)
Difference Threshold
The smallest difference between two stimuli that can be detected
(Being able to detect the difference between two different weights)
Signal Detection
Correctly identifying when a faint stimulus is or is not present
(a radiologist correctly detecting cancer from a mammogram)
The Muller-lyer illusion / The ponzo illusion
Things might seem different sizes depending on context even tho they are the same
The gate theory of pain
Incoming pain messages are influenced by factors such as chronic stress that increases response or rubbing of the elbow that might reduce it.
What is the Cornea?
The clear surface at the front of the eye that begins the process of directing light
Pupil
an oppening formed by the iris
Iris
the brightly coloured muscle surronding the pupil
Lens
The clear structure behind the pupil that bends light towards the retina
Retina
Layers of visual processing cells in the back of the eye
Rod - Stav
A photoreceptor specilized to detect dim light
cone - tappar
A photoreceptor that processes colour and fine details. requires alot more light
Optic nerve
The nerve exiting the retina of the eye
Optic tracts
Nerve pathways traveling from the optic chiasm to the thalamus, hypothalamus
