Justification Flashcards
Give a definition of Justification.
- “Just as if I had not sinned”.
- Because of Jesus’ atoning work on the cross, God declares that I am forgiven. I am acquitted. I stand before God, righteous in his sight.
- debt paid, made righteous
What is the basis on which God justifies the sinner?
Re-worded question - How are people justified?
on the atoning work work of Christ on the cross
- Second Corinthians 5:21 – God made him who had no sin to become sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Identify and discuss the primary Scripture passages which teach the concept of justification.
- Romans 1:17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. - By faith alone God’s righteousness becomes our righteousness.
- Romans 3:23-24 All have sinned… Justified by grace as a gift through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus
- 2 Cor. 5:21 - God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
What is the nature of the change brought about by justification?
New Status - Right with God
The declaration “not guilty” is spoken over me. Instantly “my status” changes from one condemned by sin to one who is acquitted, no longer facing the punishment the law imposes.
New Family - Included in God’s Covenant People
Enemy - daughter
New Future - Hope of a Transformed Life
Describe the relationship between justification and regeneration.
Justification
- Changes our relation to God. Enemy – child.
- Seen as righteous.
- Forgiven, but character not yet changed.
Regeneration
- a new nature (inward transformation)
- Allows for the process of sanctification so that we are more like Christ
