Why are both natures essential to the person of Christ
HUMAN
- Only a human can die, and that was necessary to break the power of sin and death
- Only as a human could he die and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. (Hebrews 2:14)
- because he was fully human, he understand our weaknesses and is able to be a merciful High Priest
- (Heb 4:14-15) Therefore, since we have a great High Priest, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours …
GOD
- Sacrifice had to be perfect to atone for the sins of the world (John 1:29)
- power to defeat sin and death
Why do you believe Christ is God?
- Prophesies about him fulfilled
- Lots of people said he was God
- Peter (Matthew 16:15 You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God)
- Paul (Col 2:9 “For in Christ lives the fullness of God in a human body”)
- God the Father (Matthew 3:16-17 “This is my Son, whom I love …”)
- John (John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God.
- Jesus (John 14:9 “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” John 10:30 “The Father and I are one”. The Jews call this blasphemy. I must be about my Father’s business
- Performs many miracles
- He forgave sins (Matt. 9:2 “Your sins are forgiven. Blasphemy! Is it easier to say your sins are forgiven, or get up and walk”)
- Rose from the dead! (Romans 1:4)
What is meant by the pre-existence of Christ? Is He eternal? Does He have a beginning or ending?
Pre-existence of Christ – Christ existed before he came to earth.
- Because there is only one God, each person of the Trinity always exists with the others.
- John 1:1,2 “In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God. The Word was God. He Existed in the beginning with God”
- John 8:58 “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM” This name rooted in the name YHWH, which was the name of God used when he called Moses. Ex. 3:14
Christ is Eternal – no beginning or end
- Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8)
- I am the LORD, I do not change (Malachi 3:6)
- Rev. 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.”
Explain how the historic Christ was conscious of His divinity
- John 8:58 “Even before Abraham existed, I AM”
- Jesus says that he is greater than the prophets (Sign of Jonah = Luke 11 Jesus says that the Queen of Sheba will stand up on judgement day and condemn non-believers because someone greater that Solomon is with them, and they didn’t listen. Same for the people of Nineveh, because someone greater than Jonah – they did not repent.
- He says he has been given all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 29:19)
- Forgives sins (lame man Luke 7 - woman who annointed him with oil)
- He says “My father and I are one” (John 10:30)
- “Anyone who has seen me has seen the father” (John 14:9)
How may it be proven that Christ was really a man?
- He was born as a baby and had a human mother (Matthew 1:18).
- He got tired (talking to Samitan woman).
- He was hungry, and thirsty (on the cross).
- He experienced emotions like compassion (had compassion on the crowds because they were confused and helpless like a sheep without a shepherd), anger and saddnes (because of hard hearts when he healed on the Sabbath), and love (John 15:12).
- He died
- He was fully God and at the same time fully man. Paul says, “For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body” (Col. 2:9).
How do you understand the nature of the resurrection of Jesus? What theological meaning does it hold for you?
- Paul tells us in Romans (1:4) that “he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit”.
- He has give us victory over sin and death through the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:57).The resurrection also means that Sin no longer has a hold on me. It is now possible for me to resist sin, and to live a life that is pleasing to God
- His victory over death and sin means that my sins are forgiven, and I will someday also live forever with God.
- If Christ HAS NOT been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. (1 Cor. 15:21)
- Rom. 6:23
Fundamental Characteristics of Christ
- Fully God and fully man (Col. 2:9)
- Loving (1 John 4:8)
- Sinless (2 Cor. 5:21)
