define ethics
the justification for human behaviours
-why something is moral or immoral
-the living expression of the covenant to please God
define ethical monotheism
believing in one god as the source for one’s standards of morality, guiding humanity through ethical principals
what does the commandments of the Torah include?
613 mitzvot (laws) in leviticus
halakah (jewish legal framework derived from the TaNaK)
why does a person use morality and a system of ethics?
to reach out towards God and towards other human beings
what are some examples of issues that mitzvots focus on?
what kings must do, how priests and rabbis must act, how one should farm, what one should wear, ethical and dietary laws
what is the prophetic vision?
a prophet passes Gods message on to the rest of the community -> the prophet’s message was the maintenance and protection of the Covenant
what are Deeds of loving kindness
acts of unconditional loving kindness towards other people
what is Tikkun olam and its purpose in judaism?
it is the repair of the world (social justice)
-jewish people are ‘co-creators’
-an approach to social action
-a concept -> ethics/principals

what is the book of proverbs
a collection of discussion and stand-alone sayings (proverbs) that focus on how life should be lived in God’s world
what is the importance of ethical teachings in the life of adherents
-provide them with a relationship with an immanent being providing them with a source of guidance and purpose in life
-following the ethics strengthen their relationship with God through moral conduct and reinforcement of core principals
-uphold covenantal promises
