traditional pre-islamic arabia had a belief in animism (spirits) or polytheism (multiple Gods), there were christians and jews but they didn’t influence others
people of Makkah worshipped a high god called Allah together

when Muhammad was 40 (610) he saw and received an awe-inspiring revelation from a most powerful spiritual being who he later identified as the archangel Jibril at Mt Hira. the angel announced Muhammad as messenger of Allah and through this interaction he discovered the unity and supremacy of Allah, fear of hell, the iniquity of idolatry and the reward of the faithful in paradise
What did Muhammad teach
taught that the word of God was an extension of God, that there was only one God and that God alone should be worshipped

he is believed to be the perfect example of surrender to Allah’s will

he is regarded as the seal of prophets, the revelation is completed with him as he receives the Qur’an therefore is the final messenger of god

all the traditions and practices of Muhammad that have become models to be followed by Muslims
what is the hadith
the traditional reports of what the Prophet Muhammad did and/or said; they are second only to the Qur’an in religious importance
