What is God in Judaism?
‘God’ in Judaism is referred to as YHWH (יהוה)
How do Jews view Yahweh?
They have such respect for Yahweh that they will often not use the name, instead in the torah Yahweh is referred to as Adonai (Lord) or Hashem (The/His name)
What are the religious buildings?
Synagogues
- A synagogue serves as a place not only for liturgical services but also for assembly and study
What is the Tetregrammaton?
This is a way to refer to the name of God, though it itself is not the name. The name for god in Hebrew is יהוה, which translates to YHWH
What is the religious text?
The sacred text in Judaism is the Torah
What language is the Torah in?
Hebrew
What does the Torah contain?
The Torah is a compilation of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, namely the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
What is a yad?
A Yad is a pointer stick which helps people read the torah, the torah is so sacred that people cannot touch it. Instead people use the Yad to point and keep track of where they are reading.
What are the rules and commandments?
Jews are told to follow the 613 commandments written in the Torah, these are called the Mitzvot.
What are the Mitzvot?
- The 613 commandments are the laws given by God to Israel through Moses in the Torah.
- There are 10 main rules, called the 10 commandments. It is the duty of a Jewish person to abide by these 613 mitzvot.
Who is the religious leader?
-Rabbi.
- A person qualified by academic studies of the Hebrew Bible
What are the two main initiation rituals?
Bat Mitzvah and Bar Mitzvah
What is a Bar Mitzvah?
- Bar in Hebrew means son, and Mitzvah means commandment, all together Bar Mitzvah is the son of the commandments.
- This is turning a boy into a man, meaning they must now abide and follow the Mitzvot (commandments).
- Only for boys
What is a Bat Mitzvah?
- Only for girls
- Turning a girl into a women
- Initiation into the Jewish religion
What is Orthodox and Reform?
Orthodox and Reform are two branches of Judaism. Orthodox is much stricter, and more traditional than reform.
