What happens in Baptism (spiritually)
- The water washes away sins, once cleansed, they were able to accept Jesus Christ
- Baptism washes away original sin, humanities inborn tendency to disobey and rebel against God.
What did John the Baptist teach us?
John taught that those who came to him, repented and confessed their sins during baptism would be morally cleansed
How did St Paul describe Baptism?
St Paul taught that baptism is a ‘watery grave’ in which you bury your former sins

In a baptism there are three crucial elements, chrism, clothing and a candle
What is Chrism in Baptism?
Chrism is olive oil scented with balsam, the oil is blessed by a bishop
What is clothing in Baptism?
The second element is the white garment that is worn during baptism, this symbolises the new life Christ has given them
What is a candle in Baptism?
Third is the baptismal candle which indicates they have been enlightened by Christ, whose light burns within them and in turn enlightens the world
