Purpose of this article?
Describe a new line of clamps specifically designed for dogs and to review the procedure and materials used for isolating the operative field in endodontic patients
When and by whom was introduced the first dental dam in human dentistry?
Dr Sanford Barnum in 1864.
What are the advantages (4) of using dental dam?
- better control of cross-infection and improves treatment efficiency.
- provides an aseptic field isolating the tooth from oral and salivary contamination
- improves access and visibility to the operating field by retraction of soft tissues
- protects from possible aspiration or swallowing of instruments, drugs, irrigating solutions, and tooth/material debris.
Are rubber dam often used in veterinary dentistry? Why?
No.
Reasons:
- lack of experience,
- underestimation of its benefits
- unfavorable past experiences when using clamps that are not specific for the canine species
- amount of time required to place a rubber dam is often overestimated.
What is the main advantages of this new dental dam?
Clamp are made especialy for dogs and better adapt to dogs’ teeth (different sizes available).
Butterfly clamps provide better access to the tooth
What materials are needed?
Rubber dam sheet: 152 x 152 mm size; 0,25mm thick
Rubber dam punch: variable size
Rubber dam frame: metal or plastic
How is the dental dam put in place?
3 similar techniques:
- Technique 1: rubber dam sheet & clamp assembled than placed on tooth followed by placement of rubber dam frame
How is dental dam put in place?
- Technique 2: rubber dam sheet & clamp & rubber dam frame assembled than put on tooth
How is dental dam put in place?
Technique 3: rubber dam sheet & frame assembled, than put on tooth, than clamp is fixed.
What armamentarium is needed to place a rubber dam?
Clamp rubber dam sheet rubber dam punch rubber dam frame clamp forceps
