Q

Pink has the same Additive as Lavender and white, what departments require a pink top tube?

A

Pink can be used for whole blood hematology.
immunohematology testing
blood donor screening.
Designed with special cross-match label for patient information. Tube inversions 8 - 10 x’s

16
Q

This tube requires 3-4 inversions, name the colour of this tube and it’s additive?

A

Light blue sodium citrate tube

17
Q

Exceptions for changing order of draw?

A

When there is a large no. Of one kind of tube, it may be advisable to draw one of each colour before drawing the group.
If it appears there is going to be difficulty obtaining all of the requests.if the flow stops early the phlebotomist has a better chance of more tests getting done.

18
Q

How does order of draw differ for micro container tubes?

A
  1. Lavender is first because of EDTA. And to prevent specimen clotting.
  2. Green
  3. Gray
  4. Gold
  5. Red
19
Q

Why do you gently invert tubes rather than shaking?

A

Gently invert to ensure thorough mixing of the additives. Shaking the tube can cause haemolysis

20
Q

Why is the light blue tube drawn before serum tubes?

A

To prevent contamination with clot activators and interference with the coagulation cascade.

21
Q

What serum tubes are coated with clot activator?

A

Plastic serum tubes, because plastic tubes do not promote coagulation.

22
Q

What department and tests are done on gold top or red/grey speckle top tubes containing clot activator and gel for serum separation?

A

Immunology and serology dept used for chemistry determinations.

23
Q

What department and tests are performed on a light green (mint) or green/ gray speckle top tube? Containing lithium heparin and gel for plasma separation.

A

Usually referred to as a PST TUBE (plasma separation tube). Biochemistry department for tests that require plasma

24
Q

What department requires a red top glass tube that is silicon coated?

A

Used in biochemistry, immunology, serology and blood bank depts

25
Q

Gold top tubes and orange top tubes both provide serum for testing how do the differ

A

Gold are referred to as SST TUBES (serum separator tubes) orange top are referred to as RST TUBES (rapid separator tubes)

26
Q

What department and tests are performed on navy tubes (royal blue)? They contain K2EDTA
(Di-potassium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)

A

Mainly used in toxicology dept, trace metal analysis and nutritional studies

27
Q

What department requires a dark green tube containing sodium heparin and what tests are done?

Clue: The testing laboratory requires living cells to provide a good cell culture.

A

Cytogenetics used mainly for cytogenetic testing and amino acids

Since all heparin tubes are colored some shade of green, it is important that one must read the additive written on the tube to insure that you are using Sodium Heparin and NOT Lithium Heparin. Lithium Heparin will not keep the cells alive long enough to yield a proper cell culture;

28
Q

Grey tubes containing potassium oxalate and sodium fluoride are for what tests?

A

Glucose and lactate
GGT - Gamma-glutamyl transferase

GGT levels fall after meals; you may be instructed to fast (nothing to eat or drink except water) for at least 8 hours prior to the test. You may also be asked to stop drinking alcohol or taking certain prescription medications.

29
Q

What additives are in grey top tubes

A
  1. Potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride or
  2. Sodium fluoride/Na2 EDTA
    Or
  3. Sodium fluoride ( serum tube)
30
Q

What three places can you find serous fluid?

A
The pleural cavity (lung lining)
The pericardial (heart lining)
The peritoneal cavity (abdomen lining)
31
Q

What is effuson?

A

An increase in fluid volume in the pleural, pericardial and peritoneal cavities of the body. Usually caused by infection.

32
Q

What can cause hemoconcentration?Hemoconcentration is a decrease in plasma volume, which causes a simultaneous increase in the concentration of red blood cells and other commonly tested constituents of the blood.

A

1) Drawn blood from a patient who had gone from laying down to sitting upright immediately prior to the draw?
2) Left the tourniquet on for more than 60 seconds?
3) Instructed the patient to pump his or her fist?

33
Q

Vitamin K deficiency

Vitamin K is a necessarily component in factors II, VII, IX, and X. What will a deficiency in vitamin K lead to?

A

vitamin K will lead to a decrease in factors II, VII, IX & X an elevated PT. Potential causes that can lead to decreased vitamin K levels include malnutrition, prolonged antibiotic use, and impairments with fat absorption.

34
Q

What is a biosafety cabinet or fume hood and what does it do?

A

A biosafety cabinet or fume hood should eliminate exposure to volatile liquids, dusts, and mists. It is advisable to use a laboratory hood when working with all hazardous substances.
