Joints and Movement Flashcards
Ligament
Hold bone to bone
Tendon
Hold Muscle to bone
Joint
Where 2 or more bones meet
Synarthroses
Joints that do not have any movement
Amphiarthrases
Joints that move slightly
Diarthroses
Joints that move a lot
Sutures
Interlocking bones
Syndemoses
Held together by a ligament
Gomphosis
Peg and socket
Synchondroses
Bones united by hyaline cartilage
Symphyses
Bones united by fibrocartilage
Plane joint
Flat surfaces meet and allow a gliding movement
-Vertebrae, thumb carpals
Hinge Joint
Flex and extension joint.
-Elbow
Pivot Joints
1 bone protrudes into a sleeve made of ligaments.
-Axis, Dens, Proximal radioulnar joint
Condyloid/Ellipsoidal Joint
Oval surface of one bone fits into a depression in another bone.
- Wrist, knuckle
Ball and Socket joint
Ball/head of one bone fits into a socket/cavity of another.
-Shoulder, hip
Saddle Joints
Similar to condyloid, allows for greater movement.
-thumb
Flexation
Bending movement,
Decreasing angle.
Ex. Bending head toward chest.
Estension
Increasing the angle.
Straightening a flexed limb.
Hyperextension
Extending limb beyond anatomical postion.
Abduction
Movement of a limb away from the midline.
Ex. Raising arm/thigh laterally
Adduction
Moving a limb toward the midline.
Circumduction
Moving limb in a cone shape.
Ex. Moving arm/leg in a circle and keeping joint still.
Medial rotation
Turing the bone around own its own axis.
Ex. Thigh moves toward median plane.
Lateral Rotation
Turning of a bone around its own axis away from teh midline.
Supination
Rotating forearm so palm faces anteriorly or superiorly.
Pronation
Rotating forearm so palm faces toward or away from the body.
Dorsiflexation
Top of foot approaches the shin
Planter Flexion
Pointing your toes.
Inversion
Sold of foot turns medially
Enversion
Sole of foot points laterally.
Protraction
Nonangular anterior movements on transverse plane.
Retraction
Nonangular posterior movements on transverse plane.
Elevation
Lifting a body part superiorly
Depression
Moving elevated limb inferiorly.
Opposition
Thumb moves to touch the tips of the fingers on the same head. (Allows for grabbing)
