Joints Flashcards
Fibrous joints
fixed and immovable, designed for stability e.g. skull bones
Cartilaginous joints
connected by cartilage
more movement than fibrous joints, but function is still stability e.g. pubic symphysis
Synovial joints
free and moveable joints, most prominent in the body
6 kinds of synovial joints in the body: pivot, hinge, condyloid, saddle, plane, ball-and-socket
Pivot joint
rotational movements e.g. C1/C2 joints
Hinge joint
hinging or swinging movement e.g. knee, elbow, finger, toe joints
Condyloid joint
head of one bone fits into a cavity of another e.g. wrist carpal joints
Saddle joint
like hinge just with more range of motion e.g. thumb joint
Plane joint
gliding joints e.g. wrist joint
Ball- and-socket joint
ball shaped surface of one bone fits into the hole shaped surface of another bone e.g. hip and shoulder joints
