joints Flashcards
any point where two bones meet
joint
science of joint structure, function and dysfunction
arthrology
general classification of the joints on the base how freely the bones move (4)
- Bony joint
- Fibrous joint
- Cartilagenous joint
- Synovial joint
bony joint
synostosis
formed by ossification of either fibrous or cartilagenous joints
cranial bones, long bones with age. first rib and sternum
Fibrous joint
Synarthrosis
Adjacent bones are bound by collagen fibers that emerge from 1 bone, cross the space btw them and penetrate into the other.
3 types of fibrous joints
- Suture
- Gomphoses
- Syndesmoses
suture. what is it plus 3 types of sutures
immovable or only slightly movable joint in skull
- serrate (coronal, sagittal, lambdoid)
- Lap or squamous (temporal and parietal)
- plate (butt) btw palatine processes of maxilla in the roof of the mouth.
Gomphoses
tooth to socket by fibrous peridontal ligament (collagen)
moves a little or gives under stress of chewing
syndesmoses
relatively long collagenous fibers
btw radius and ulna - interosseous membrane - allows pronation and supination
What are cartilagenous joints and 2 types
Amphiarthrosis
two bones are linked by cartilage
1. synchondrosis
2.symphysis
Synchondrosis
bound by hyaline cartilage
temporary joint btw epyphisis and diaphysis of a long bone in children (epiphyseal plate)
or first rib and sternum
symphysis
bound by fibrocartilage
pubic symphysis, btw bodies of vertebrae
synovial joints
Diarthroses
can be multiaxial
monoaxial
biaxial
