Joints Flashcards
What are the three classifications of joint
fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
What determines the range of motion at a joint
The bone ends
What makes up a synovial joint
Bone ends, Articular cartilage, Joint capsule, Joint cavity (potential space), Synovial membrane, Ligaments
What is the purpose of hyaline (articular) cartilage in a synovial joint
Covers bone ends where they articulate to allow smooth and frictionless movement
What is the joint capsule composed of
Outer layer of DFCT and an inner layer of synovial membrane
What does the inner layer of synovial membrane do
Secretes synovial fluid
Lubricates the joint
Provides nutrients to avascular structures
what does the joint capsule do and how does it vary
Holds bones together - varies by thickness and tightness to allow for change in movement and support
What is present in joint capsules where more support is required
Capsular ligaments
