Joints Flashcards
What is a joint ?
A joint is the union between two or more rigid components
What is another term for a joint ?
Articulation
What is the function of a joint ?
Movement and growth
What are the names of the three kinds of joint ?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
What is a fibrous joint ?
They are made of dense fibrous connective tissue and have high tensile strength.
They don’t allow for really any movement in adults.
What is a cartilaginous joint ?
Layers of cartilage
What are the names of the two types of cartilaginous joint ?
Synchondroses
Symphyses
What is a synchondroses joint ?
Primary cartilaginous
They allow for bone growth but there is no movement.
They don’t exist in adults.
What is a symphyses joint ?
They don’t ossify.
They are found in the midline of the body.
They allow limited movement.
i.e. Intervertebral discs
What are synovial joints ?
They allow a great deal of movement . They have an articular cartilage, articular discs, synovial cavity, synovial membrane, fibrous capsule and ligaments.
What are the different types of synovial joint ?
Hinge Pivot Saddle Condylar Plane Ball and socket
What factors determine joint stability ?
Shape of articulating surfaces
Fibrous capsule and ligaments
Muscles
What is an anastomoses ?
Where blood vessel reconnect to move around a joint safety without restricting movement of that joint
What is proprioception ?
There are proprioceptors in the joints of the body which help the body to know where parts of the body are
What is Hiltons law ?
The nerve supplying a joint will also supply the muscles and skin covering that joint
