Joints Flashcards
Definition of joint
A joint is a site where 2 or more bones are articulated
Classifications of joints
Fibrous joints
Cartilaginous joints
Synovial joints
Fibrous joints types
Sutures Gomphosis (peridontal ligaments) Syndesmosis (2 bony surfaces connected by interosseous ligament) (Inferior tibo-fibular joint, middle radio-ulnar)
Cartilagenous bone types
Primamry: Connected by hayaline cartilage, quite immobile, temporary
Secondary: connected by fibrocartlage, limted degree of movement, permenant
Primary Cartilagenous example
Epiphyseal cartilage plate
1st costochondral joint
Secondary Cartilagenous example
Intervertebral disc.
Symphysis pubis
Manubriosternal joint
Synovial joints
Bones involved are linked together by fibrous capsule which is lined by synovial membrane, freely mobile
Plane joints
Vertebral articular processes
Proximal tibiofibular joint
Acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints
Intercarpal and intermetacarpal joints
Pivot joint
Movement is only rotation
Atlanto-axial joint
Superior and inferior radioulnar joints
Hinge joint
movemments are only flexsion and extension
Elbow joint
Knee joint
interphalangeal joints
Condyloid
Biconcave articulate with biconvex
Metacarpo-phalyngeal and metatarso-phalyngeal joints
Ellipsoid joints
Elliptical iconcave articulates with elliptical biconvex
Wrist joint
Atlanto-occipital joint
Saddle joint
concavo-convex artiulated with a convexo-concave
carpo-metacarpal joints of the THUMB
Poly-axial (Ball and socket)
A hemispherical head which fits into a cup shapped surface
Shoulder joint and hip joint
