The union of two or more bones. Classified according to construction or degree of movement.
Joints
aka “Sutures”. This are the inflexible layers of dense connective tissues that holds bones tightly together.
(Do not allow for movement)
Fibrous Joints
Consists of bones connected by cartilage. Allows “slight movement” of joint.
Cartilaginous Joints
The articulation of joints permitting “variety of movements”. Described on the basis of the type of motion: Ball & Socket, and Hinge.
Synovial Joints
Surgical fusion of two bones
Arthrodesis
Surgical loosening of ankylosed joint
Arthrolysis
Minimally invasive procedure for treating interior of joint
Arthroscopic surgery
Surgical repair of damaged cartilage
Chondroplasty
Surgical removal of synovial membrane from a joint
Synovectomy
All parts of the knee are replaced
Total knee replacement
Only part of the knee is replaced
Partial knee replacement
Restores damaged hip to full function
Total hip replacement
Placing of metal cap over head of femur to restore function of the hip
