Compression fracture
Fracture at lower-end of radius
Colles’ Fracture
Broken hip due to osteoporosis. May occur spontaneously or may be the result of a fall.
Osteoporotic hip fracture
Described in terms of complexity
Broken bone
Simple fracture. Bone is broken; no open wound on skin.
Closed fracture
Compound fracture. Bone is broke; open wound in the skin.
Open fracture
Bone is splintered or crushed.
Comminuted fracture
Bone is bent and partially broken. Seen frequently in children.
Greenstick fracture
Fracture is at an angle across the bone.
Oblique fracture
Due to weakened bone; not due to trauma
Pathologic fracture
Due to twisting action
Spinal fracture
Due to overuse
Stress fracture
Occurs straight across the bone
Transverse fracture
Fat cells from yellow bone marrow are released into the blood. May form with fracture of long bone.
Fat embolus
Grating sound when ends of broken bone move together
Crepitation
