Bones Flashcards
The formation of the bones. Begins after 3-months gestation and continues through adolescence.
Ossification
Growing of bones continues through the actions of “these” repairing minor damages and fractures.
Osteoclast & Osteoblast
Bone cell that absorbs and removes unwanted bone tissue. They are found on the surface of the bond mineral next to the dissolving bone.
Osteoclast
Bone cell that helps form new bone tissue. They also come from the bone marrow and are related to structural cells.
Osteoblast
This tough shell is hardest tissue in human body. It is the thin outer covering of a tooth, that covers the crown which is the part of the tooth that’s visible outside if the gums.
Enamel
Tough, fibrous tissue forming the outermost covering of the bone.
Periosteum
Dense, hard strong bone forming protective outer layers if the bone.
Compact bone
Porous, thus more susceptible to fractures.
Spongy bone
Central hollowed-out area in the shaft of a long bone. Storage site of red & yellow bone marrow.
Medullary cavity
Lines medullary cavity
Endosteum
Death of bone tissues due to insufficient blood flow
Avascular necrosis
Malformation of skull due to premature closure of cranial sutures
Craniostenosis
Inflammation of a bone
Osteitis
Abnormal softening of bones in adults
Osteomalacia
Inflammation of the bone marrow and adjacent bone
Osteomyelitis
