Joint Movements Flashcards
abduction
movement away from a central reference point
adduction
movement toward a central reference point
lateral rotation
turning a bone or limb around its long axis laterally or away from the midline
medial rotation
turning medially toward midline
flexion
usually a movement that decreases a joint’s angle
extension
usually a movement that increases a joint’s angle
hyperextension
forced extension beyond its normal range of motion
elevation
lifting superiorly (shrugging shoulders)
depression
movement or a portion of the body inferiorly
pronation
rotation of radius about ulna, causing hand to face posteriorly
supination
causes palm to face anteriorly
circumduction
movement in space that circumscribes a circle or cone about a joint
dorsiflexion
lifting the foot at the ankle joint (like extension of wrist)
plantarflexion
downward movement of foot at ankle (like wrist flexion)
eversion
movement of the sole of the foot laterally
inversion
movement of the sole of the foot medially
retraction
posterior displacement of a portion of the body without a change in angular movement
protraction
anterior displacement of a portion of the body without a change in angular movement
lateral flexion
movement of a part of the body laterally
opposition
thumb movement that bring the tip of the thumb to the tip of a finger
