Joint Integrity Flashcards
Joint Integrity
An non specific term used in guide; is the joint anatomically and biomechanically normal
Joint Mobility
ability of the joint to be moved passively
Accessory Motion
small, isolated motions normally present at a joint that must be performed passively by an examiner or external force; they cannot be performed actively
Accessory Motion Examples
ACL
MCL
ATF
Glenohumeral
Testing anthrokinematics
Physiologic ROM Examples
Gross motion between limb segments measured with a goniometer
knee flexion/ extension, ankle dorsiflexion, shoulder abduction
Testing Osteokinematics
Anthrokinematics
movement of joint surfaces
Osteokinematics
movement of joint
What are the three variables of testing accessory motion?
Motion
pain
end feel
End feel
nature of the resistance perceived by the examiner’s hand as the end range is approached
hard
normal ligament
soft
torn ligament
capsular
leathery
ex: shoulder lateral rotation, flexion, abduction
spasm
pain/fear sudden halt associated with muscle action
empty
no physical resistance, stop due to intense pain
bony
hard, abrupt stop
ex elbow extension
tissue approximation
elbow flexion
Sprain
overstretching injury to joint (capsule/ligament) tissue
Grade 1 sprain
overstretching majority of fibers intact
motion, pain, end feel hard
Grade 2 sprain
partial tear
has motion or increased, pain, end feel soft
Grade 3 sprain
complete tear
increased motion, no pain, end feel soft, non distinct
immediate
in minutes vascular tissues are damaged
delayed
couple hours has no vascular supply; cartilage injury
reactive synovitis
when flakes of cartilage get into joint
effusion
abnormal amount of fluid around a joint which causes swelling
edema
interstitial tissue spaces not confined
