Joint Disorders - Bursitis, Synovitis, Tendinitis Flashcards
Bursitis:
inflammation bursae associated with bones, muscles, tendon, ligaments of various joints
Bursae:
small fluid-filled sacs
act as a cushion at or near structures of the joint
the most common cause of Bursitis inflammation
repetitive motions
positions physically irritate bursae at specific joint
examples of positions physically irritate bursae at specific joint
throwing baseball repeatedly
washing floors frequently on hands and knees
Dx Bursitis:
primarily... physical examination joint appears; red, swollen, achy, stiff pain with joint motion
imaging - ultrasound, MRI
analysing fluid in bursae - detect underlying problems e.g. infection.
Tx Bursitis:
the first step involves... rest, cold compresses, pain relievers if persists or worsens... antiinflammatory drugs physical therapy antibiotics - cases infection severe ... bursae drained
Synovitis
inflammation synovial membrane lining joint
Symptoms Synovitis:
movement joint restricted and painful due swelling synovial sacs fill fluid
joints become swollen, red, warm
Dx Synovitis
analysing synovial fluid signs of infection, crystal indicating gout
Tx Synovitis
antiinflammatory drugs
treatment for underlying causes e.g. infection
Tendinitis
irritation or inflammation tendon
What is Tendinitis usually characterised by?
dull ache at the site tendon attachment
tenderness
swelling
Cause Tendinitis
can be single sudden trauma
more likely repetitive motions actions
Diagnosis Tendinitis
physical examination
Tx Tendinitis
fist line…
rest, ice, pain relievers
persists or worsen…
antiinflammatory drugs, PT
cases where significant injury tendon..
surgery
