Joint Components Flashcards
what is synovial fluid?
lubricates a joint, reduces friction
what is a joint capsule?
connective tissue attached to a bone that forms a sleeve around the joint
what does the joint capsule do?
holds everything together, support
what is articulate cartilage? where is it located?
tissue that lines the body surface of the joint. at the end of long bones
what does articulate cartilage do?
shock absorber, also a lubricant so reduces friction
what are bursas?
small fluid-filled sacs
what do bursas do?
reduce tension & the negative effects of wear and tear
what is the skeletal muscle?
highly organised tissue composed of bundles of muscle fibre.
what is the importance of the skeletal muscle?
nutrient store, allows voluntary movement
what are tendons?
connects muscle to bone
how do tendons cause movement?
transfer force produced by muscle to move bone
what do ligaments do?
restrict movement, support joint
what are nerves?
cable bundle of nerve fibres that carry electrical impulses between brain and rest of body
if nerves damaged, what would happen?
no sensation, no movement, less control over limbs as damaged internal nerves
