Joint Action Definitions Flashcards
Flexion
Decreases angle of joint in sagittal plane
Extension
Increases angle of joint in sagittal plane
Hyperextension
Goes beyond anatomical position in sagittal plane
Abduction
Moves bone away from midline in frontal plane
Adduction
Moves bone toward midline in frontal plane
Rotation
Bone spins around its own axis
Circumduction
Bone describes a cone, in space (point of cone is on joint)
Supination
Movement of radius around ulna so palm faces forward or up
Pronation
Movement of radius around ulna so palm faces backward or down
Inversion
The sole of the foot turns medially, at ankle
Eversion
The sole of the foot turn laterally at ankle
Elevation
The jaw or shoulder moves upward (as in closing mouth, shrugging up)
Depresssion
The mandible or shoulder moves downward (as in dropping jaw)
Radial Deviation
Wrist swings in frontal plane towards radius
Ulnar Deviation
Wrist swings in frontal plane toward ulna
Protraction
Jaw or shoulder moves forward in sagittal plane
Retraction
Jaw or shoulder moves backward in sagittal plane
Dorsi-flexion
Movement of the ankle where the toes move superiorly
Plantar-flexion
Movement of the ankle where the toes move inferiorly
Opposition
Thumb can touch each fingertip
Reposition
Thumb and fingertips go back to anatomical position
