Functions and Divisions of the Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 2 major divisions of the human nervous system?
Central Nervous System & Peripheral Nervous System
What are the 2 functional subdivisions of the PNS?
- The sensory, or afferent, division
2. The motor, or efferent, division
What are the 2 main parts of the motor division of the PNS?
- Somatic nervous system
2. Autonomic nervous system
What are the 2 functional subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic division
2. Parasympathetic division
What is the somatic nervous system also known as?
Voluntary nervous system
What is the autonomic nervous system also known as?
Involuntary nervous system
What does the CNS consist of?
The brain and spinal cord.
What does the PNS consist of?
All neural structures outside the brain and those starting inside and ending outside of the spinal cord and brain.
What do sensory nerves do?
Receive info from the senses, skin, organs and muscles.
What do motor nerves do?
Take info to the muscles and glands.
What do somatic sensory fibers do?
Conveys impulses from the skin, skeletal muscles, and joints.
What do visceral sensory fibers do?
Transmits impulses from the visceral organs.
What are the 3 functions of the nervous system?
- Sensory input
- Integration
- Motor output
