36 hr peaceful teach in at University of California 1964. Spread across the US from here
27
Student protests - Kent State University
Kent State University, Ohio, National Guard called in + shot 4 students sparking outcry at the killing of their own
28
Political impact of anti - war movement
Civil rights + anti war protests => fear of collapse. Nixon promised an honourable end to the war. When Nixon took over, Democrats focused on war mismanagements. Pentagon papers revealed 20+ years of wrongdoing
29
1968 Paris Peace talks
After the Tet Offensive, Johnson saw no military victory. US wanted South free of communist influences, North wanted south free of US influences. Nixon thought peace would lose him the election so he secretly convinced southern gov not to agree to deal.

Madman strategy
Nixon wanted to bring troop home but still win. Vietnamisation, massive serial bombing + tried to scare them into agreement by making them think he could nuke them
31
Vietnamisation
Nixon removed US troops + paid for South Vietnamese to replace them with their own troops
32
Paris Peace Accords
Signed 27th Jan 1973, post 11 days of bombing. Called for ceasefire, removal of remaining US troops + North could stay if they disarmed
33
Impact on containment
Showed US couldn't stop spread of communism. US quickened domino effect as Vietnam, Laos + Cambodia were all communist by 1965 from US involvement in the region. PR nightmare of being beaten by peasant farmers. US withdrew from direct military intervention in foreign affairs
