24
Q

Why did Operation end?

A

Johnson offered its termination as persuasion for negotiation
Peace talks began 2 months after operation stopped in Jan 1969

25
quagmire theory
awkward, complex, hazardous situation Americans had unintentionally and mistakenly led the country into war and could not extract themselves easily
26
Americans soldiers were supposed to
search hamlets for VC and dispense food and medical care question peasants about VC presence in the area
27
American soldiers actions towards Vietnamese civilians
Circumstances of war led them to dislike them. Herded people into a barbed wire compound and left them in the sun. If peasants had wrong ID or police held a grudge they’d be beaten, maybe tortured. Massacred villages
28
emotions of soldiers
very low asking to be shot because they couldn’t take anymore
29
how was success measured?
couldn’t be measured through territorial gain, so emphasis on body counts. More bodies meant more promotions, medals, rest and re cooperation rations
30
Tet Offensive
Jan 1968 Hanoi launched an unprecedented offensive against South Vietnam Tens of thousand of PAVN and VC attacked cities and military installations
31
Tet aims
hoped for collapse of Saigon govt or at the very least, America give up
32
Tet deaths and damages
3895 Americans, 4954 SV military, 14,300 SV civilians, 58,373 VC and PAVN died out of 17,134 houses in historic Hue 9776 were totally damaged 3169 seriously damaged
33
Clearing Saigon of Communist forces during Tet
took 11,000 troops 3 weeks
34
damage to communists from Tet
SV didn’t rise en masse to hell then which damaged claim to be liberators huge losses which took years to recover from
35
US failures Tet
first battles in SV US intelligence failed to notice clear warnings, had used festival against Chinese 1789 famous photo of Saigon General shooting a bound captive increased credibility gap between Johnson’s explanation of events and publics understanding
36
demands for troops after Tet
Johnson rejected demand for 200,000 more troops
37
Communist success Tet
position in SV countryside strengthened
38
Battle of Khe Sanh
same time as Tet successfully distracted Americans 10,000 communists 500 Americans died
39
NATO
France withdrew 1966 which removed headquarters and 26,000 American troops from France
40
Troops from other states
South Korea 50,000 1968 Thailand 11,570 Australia 7,700 Philippines and New Zealand under 3,000 between them
