A

14 year old boy brutally murdered 28th August 1955
Forced to carry a 75 pound cotton gin fan to the bank of the Tallahatchie river. He was beat to near death, his eye was gauged out, shot in the head and thrown in the river while tied to the cotton gin with barbed wire

A

Emmett Tills mother. Went to the police who told her to leave it, pushed for an investigation until they found his body. Took his body back to Chicago where 50,000 people viewed his corpse

led by MLK, most of the 50,000 black population participated. Demonstrated power of mass direct action. NAACP litigation ensured desegregation through Supreme Court ruling Browder v Gayle Nov 1956. Only applied to Montgomery

1960 made obstruction of court ordered school desegregation a federal crime and established penalties for obstruction of black voting

Feb 1960, 4 black college students refused to leave all white Woolworths cafeteria. 70,000 students participated in sit ins across the South. Cafeteria had to close and loss of business made Woolworths desegregate its lunch counters by 1961 and 150 cities began desegregating public spaces
