Joe Feagin Flashcards
Week Ten
-Patterns of unjust impoverishment versus unjust
enrichment for some groups over others and their
transmission over time.
-Often taken for granted and appear “race
neutral” yet exacerbate disparities between
groups.
- What is Systemic Racism?
SYSTEMIC RACISM THEORY
Systemic Racism is perpetuated by the intergenerational transmission of
resources and privilege
SYSTEMIC RACISM THEORY
Unearned and unacknowledged advantages accorded to members of
dominant social groups
White Privilege
-A set of beliefs, stereotypes, and narratives that reinforce the superiority of white Americans
and justify racial inequality.
-This frame includes both cognitive and emotional elements, such as feelings of entitlement
and fear of racial others, that shape how white Americans perceive race and racism.
-This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy in that inequality is perpetuated and seen as natural or
normal.
-Examples include:
-Stereotyping in Media Representation
-Everyday Language and Microaggressions
-School Curriculum and Historical Narratives
-“Meritocracy” and “Colorblind” Ideologies
The “White Racial Frame” ideology perpetuates US society
SYSTEMIC RACISM THEORY
-Even when progress is made, systemic racism adapts to preserve
racial inequality in new forms, such as mass incarceration or voter
suppression.
-The persistence of this racial hierarchy demonstrates the resilience
of systemic racism, even in the face of ongoing struggles for racial
justice.
Changing aspects of Racial Hierarchy
SYSTEMIC RACISM THEORY
-Whites are embedded in social networks that offer advantages
such as access to good jobs, educational opportunities, and
health care.
-These social networks help reproduce privilege by passing along
valuable information and opportunities within racially homogenous
groups, perpetuating exclusion of Black individuals from similar
opportunities.
-Networking capital often goes unnoticed as a source of inequality,
but it is a powerful mechanism for maintaining systemic racism by
ensuring white advantage in key areas of life.
Social Networks and Cultural Capital Support Privilege
SOCIAL REPRODUCTION OF
RACIAL OPPRESSION
-Institutions, both public and private, are designed to favor white
individuals, providing access to wealth-generating resources like
mortgages, quality housing, and education.
-White-controlled institutions, such as unions, real estate, and
banking, have historically excluded or marginalized Black
Americans, restricting their access to upward mobility.
-These institutional arrangements continue to reproduce racial
inequality, as each generation of white individuals inherits and
controls the very institutions that foster their prosperity.
