The salary of the bishop was fifteen thousand franc with an additional of three thousand francs for horses and carriage, so in total his had the salary of eighteen thousand franc. seventeen thousand franc was going to donation and patients, but had kept a thousand franc with an additional five hundred franc from his sister’s side hustle.

Jean had acted in a rude and ill manner towards the bishop, which could have led him to get kicked out, but since he had already from multiple taverns he didn’t care. The bishop, even though was treated rudely, had showed welcomeness and kindness towards Jean, which surprised him.

The Bishop instead of sending Jean Val Jean to prison, he had saved him by saying that Jean had misunderstood him, which was his white lie. With this white lie, the Bishop also gave Jean Val Jean the Silver Candle.
