What time is the novel based off of in France?
The Post Napoleonic Era - the period in time right after Napoleon Bonapartes down fall in 1815. This is were Jean Val Jean takes place. Secret Police - harsh military treatment became part of policing, - gather information on anyone who somehow got their attention, and - opened mail, heard conversation and reports and followed strangers.
