Jean Piaget-Cognitive Theorist Flashcards
What did Jean Piaget believe?
Language was constructed by interaction with the environment e.g. whether they say something is bigger or smaller they must understand relative size
What is language mapped on?
The experiences of the child
What four stages of cognitive development did Piaget devise?
Sensorimotor Period, Pre-operation Period, Operation Period (split into Concrete and formal)
What age is the Sensorimotor period?
0-2 years
What age is the Pre-operation period in?
2-7 years
What age is the concrete operational in?
7-11 years
What age is the formal operational period in?
11-Adulthood
What is the sensorimotor period?
Children are egocentric and talk about things in the moment. The grasp to learn things about environment
What is the pre-operational period?
Children’s mental capacity develops quickly, allowing them to talk about things occurring in past, future and present
What is the Operational period?
When children are no longer egocentric, and can see things from other points of view
What is a criticism of the cognitive approach?
Vygotsky criticised lack of cultural factors in Piaget’s theory- he also argued that some tasks are too difficult for children to perform on their own without older speakers
