Ise Shrine, 5th century
Importance: Oldest shinto shrine. Post and lintel entrance. Rebuit every 20 years to preserve. Guilded edges.
Hōryū-ji Temple, Nara, c. 607
Importance: oldest surviving wooden building in the world. Use of white and untreated wood- japanese tradition. assymetrical- no central axis
pagoda- 5 story temple at Hōryū-ji. Landmark tower to hold an important relic
Tōdai-ji Temple, Nara, c. 730
Importance: Every resident had to contribute to the building. Holds the largest statue of buddah in the world- bankrupted the country- all the bronze was used on the statue.
Himeji Castle, Himeji, 1333
Importance: medievel architecture. Period of fighting between war lords. Raised above the surrounding city- military fortress. made of wood- to fireproof they use plaster and sand/rocks. Spatial planning for defense one of the best in the world.
Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Kyoto, 1489
Importance: top two floors gold, foundation white, untreated walls- connection with nature. About meditation. Microcosm for the outside world.
Katsura Palace, Kyoto, c. 1620
Importance: escape villa for the royal family. module of the tatani makes up all the floors and walls. All walls are moveable- wall as windows- interor/exterior relationship
