theres a demand for their performances yet they are seen as outcasts
Kabuki
To tilt or slant dangerously

kabuki-mono = counter culture
now written using Chinese characters
becomes very popular
man theatres in Yoshiwara of Tokyo
more troupes develop with more mixed gender
government stepped in to legislate
Governemnt restirctions on kabuki
upper class women, samuri, and aristocrats cant attend
(these ppl disguised themselves still go)
then women got banned from doing Kabuki (wasnt really sticking)
now banning young male kabuki (Wakashu kabuki)
government doesn’t like class mingling through this sex work
we end up with only adult male kabuki (the had to shave top of their head)
- tried to make them ess sexually apealing
- and so you could tell their class right away
