What is a mechanical system?
A group of physical parts that interact with each other and function as a whole to complete a task.
What is force?
Force is a push or pull that acts on an object measured in newtons.
What is mass?
Amount of matter in an object.
What is the amount of force on an object due to gravity?
Weight.
What is the ability to do work?
Energy.
What is the amount of output that is produced per unit of time?
Productivity
What does efficiency mean?
The measurement of the useful work done by a machine compared to the work needed to operate the machine.
What’s a mechanism?
A mechanism is a combination of simple machines working together to perform a specific function.
What is ideal mechanical advantage?
Ideal mechanical advantage is the mechanical advantage of a machine that has no friction.
What is the difference between force and work?
Force is a push or a pull that acts on an object and work is the amount of effort expended when a force causes an object to move a distance and energy is transferred.
What are three ways machines can make a job easier?
Can move heavy things from one space to the next, can change the direction of force, and can increase the size of a force.
What are two classifications of energy?
The two classifications of energy are potential energy and kinetic energy.
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative?
Qualitative assessments are often made by observations. A quantitative assessment involves the analysis of numerical data.
Identify all six simple machines.
The six simple machines are the lever, the pulley, the wheel and axle, the inclined plane, the wedge, and the screw.
A person travels to a distant planet that has a greater gravitational field than Earth. Describe that person’s change in weight and mass.
If a person travels to a planet with a stronger gravitational field, their weight would increase. However, their mass would remain the same.
