What is mechanical advantage?
The amount of help you can get from a machine is mechanical advantage.
What is ideal mechanical advantage?
The mechanical advantage of a machine that has no friction is called the ideal mechanical advantage.
How can mechanical advantage be calculated?
MA = Output force divided by input force.
MA is mechanical advantage.
What is an example of a contact force?
Friction.
How can ideal mechanical advantage be calculated?
IMA = input distance divided by output distance.
IMA is ideal mechanical advantage.
What is the difference between mechanical advantage and ideal mechanical advantage?
The difference is that ideal mechanical advantage is the mechanical advantage of a machine that has no friction while mechanical advantage is the amount of help you can get from a machine.
Why are not all machines 100% efficient?
Machines are not 100% efficient because some of the input work is used to compensate for the work done by friction.
What contributes to inefficiency?
Friction contributes to inefficiency because when two surfaces slide past each other, friction resists the motion.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Weight is the amount of force on an object due to gravity.
Are you the same weight on different planets?
No, your weight would change because the force of gravity is different on different planets.
What is the difference between kinetic and potential energy?
Kinetic energy is the energy an object has when it is moving. Potential energy is any energy that is stored in an object.
What is the purpose of simple machines?
Simple machines allow us to lift objects, move them or multiply the force.
Why do we use simple machines?
They make our lives easier. They help us do work with less effort.
What is the difference between work, force and energy?
Work is the amount of effort spent. Energy is the ability to do work. Force is a push or pull.
