Jan 22 - Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What is the PNS
The PNS connects to the CNS to limbs and organs.
plays critical role in relaying information between the body and brain.
The PNS is essential for the sensory data input and motor command output.
what is the job of the sensory nerves?
Carry information from the body to to the brain and spinal cord(bite by a bug)
What is the job of the motor nerves
send messages from the brain and spinal cord (CNS) to the body.
What is the job of mixed nerves? How are they mixed?
contain sensory and motor fibers, sot they can do both jobs. They have both motor and sensory axons in their bundles.
How many pairs of cranial nerves are there?
12 pairs.
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there? How are they connected to the vertebrae.
31 pairs, each vertebrae is associated with 1 spinal nerve.
What are the sensory cranial nerves? what are their jobs?
- Olfactory (smell) , optic (visual) , vestibulocochlear (hear/balance)
- exclusively sensory.
What are the motor cranial nerves? what are their jobs?
- Oculomotor (eye movement) , trochlear (eye movement) , abducens (eye movement), accessory (neck), hypoglossal (tongue)
- movement of eyes neck and tongue.
- exclusively motor.
What are the mixed cranial nerves? what are their jobs?
- Trigeminal(Face sensation/chewing), facial (face movement and taste), glossopharyngeal (throate sensation, taste, swallowing), Vagus (movement, sensation, abdominal oragns) .
- carry both sensory and motor fibers and have diverse functions including facial sensation, taste, and organ controle.
Cranial Nerve 1 is:
Olfactory, sensory, smell
Cranial Nerve 2 is:
Optic, sensory, vision
Cranial Nerve 3 is:
Oculomotor, motor, Eyelid/eyeball movement
Cranial Nerve 4 is:
Trochlear, Motor, Moves eye downward and laterally
Cranial Nerve 5 is:
Trigeminal, both, facial sensation, chewing
Cranial Nerve 6 is:
Abducens, motor, turns eye laterally.
Cranial Nerve 7 is:
Facial, both, facial expression, taste, salivation, tear secretion.
Cranial Nerve 8 is:
Vestibularcochlear, Sensory, hearing and balance.
Cranial Nerve 9 is:
Glossopharyngeal, both, taste, senses careotid blood pressure.
Cranial Nerve 10 is:
Vagus, both, senses aortic blood, slows heart rate, stimulate digestive organs, taste.
Cranial Nerve 11:
Accessory, motor, control trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, swallowing movements.
Cranial Nerve 12:
Hypoglossal, motor, controls muscles pf the tongue.
Which cranial nerves are relevant to speech?
5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12
How does Cranial Nerve 5 play a role in speech?
Activiates muscles for mastication, impacting articulation.
How does Cranial Nerve 7 play a role in speech?
controls facial expressions (eg lip movement) essential for articulation.
How does Cranial Nerve 9 play a role in speech?
For movements of the pharynx.
How does Cranial Nerve 10 play a role in speech?
Vital for movements in the larynx, pharynx, velum.
How does Cranial Nerve 11 play a role in speech?
Vital for respiration.
How does Cranial Nerve 12 play a role in speech?
Controls tongue movements crucial for articulating consonants and vowels.
