Jan 10 - Anatomical planes: body materials Flashcards
What are the three anatomical planes
- Sagittal
- Coronal (frontal)
- transverse
What is a sagittal plane
When your cut creates a right and a left part you get a sagittal plane.
How many axes will planes have?
2
What are the axes we get from a sagittal plane?
vertical and anterior-posterioir
Any plane that is not a sagittal or mid-sagittal is what?
Para-sagittal planes
what is a coronal plane?
when your body gets cut into front (anterior) and back (posterior)
what are the axes for coronal/frontal planes
vertical and side-to-side
True/False: Coronal planes should be equal 50/50 mass for each piece
no, the image says 50% mass but the human body is not completely symmetrical.
What is a transverse plane?
Cut our body in upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts
what are the axes for the transverse plane?
side-side and anterior - posterior.h
which way does the sagittal axis go?
left/right
which way does the coronal axis go?
anterior/posterior
which way does the transverse axis go
up and down.
In which way do we refer to someones body, our perspective or the subjects?
We alway use planes referring to the subject perspective.
is it possible to have both eyes in a sagittal cut?
yes, sagittal does not mean mid sagittal.
can you see both eyes on the PLANE of a sagittal cut?
no? ask…
when you take a mid-sagittal slice how many dimensions do they have
2
what are the directions for talking about a sagittal plane?
left (sinistra) / right (dextrad)
what are the directions for talking about coronal planes
anterior (ventral) / posterior (dorsal)
what are the directions for talking about transverse planes?
superior (=towards head) / inferior (away from head)
what does medial mean?
towards the midline of the body
what does lateral mean?
away from the midline.
what does proximal mean?
closer to the origin/attachment
what does distal mean?
farther from the origin/attachment
what directions are cranial and caudal
cranial is towards the head and caudal is towards the tail.
what is the difference between superficial and deep?
superficial is towards the outside and deep is deeper into the body
what are the hard part of the body ?
- Bones
- Cartilages
What are the soft parts of the body?
- muscles
- tendons
- ligaments
what do tendons and ligaments do?
Tendons connect muscle to bone
Ligaments connect bone to bone.
What is a striated muscle vs. a smooth muscle?
Striated: can be moved voluntarily (often works in pairs: agonist-antagonist)
Smooth: works without voluntary efforts.
