James and religion Flashcards
What was james’ initial attitude toward catholics like?
He was initially tolerant and ordered that recusancy fines be reduced, this changed when in 1604, all priests and jesuits were ordered to leave the country and recusancy fines be collected in full.
Why did james change his policy to Catholics?
The 1604 parliament demanded recusancy fines be collected, james did not want to antagonize parliament whist he was trying to promote his cherished union between England and Scotland.
What two reasons were behind the gunpowder plot?
- England’s peace with Spain in 1604 deprived catholics of any hope of foreign intervention. 2. James’ reissuing of recusancy fines.
Give a brief summary of the gunpowder plot
The plan was to dig a tunnel under parliament and set off an explosion to kill the king. It was led by Catesby but was uncovered owing to the monteagle letter, a warning sent to a member of Parliament not to attend the session.
List three consequences of the gunpowder plot
- James was upset and feared for his life, retreating into solitude. 2. Recusancy fines were increased and Catholics were forbidden from living in/near London and holding public office. 3. Catholics had to take an oath of allegiance to the king.
Why did Catholicism become a problem after the thirty years’ war broke out in 1618?
A number of events combined with it to raise fears about popery including: the Spanish match, the failure to support Protestants in Europe and the relaxation of recusancy laws 1622-23 as part of negotiations with Spain.
What was james presented with in 1603 on his way to London?
The Millenary petition, it was allegedly signed by 1000 clergy and called for moderate puritan church reforms, james viewed it with suspicion, but agreed to call a conference at Hampton court the next year.
What was the Hampton court conference 1604?
- It was a discussion between bishops and moderate puritans, discussions were largely harmonious and with much agreement. 2. It was decided that a new form of the Bible would be printed, this appeared as the 1611 King James Bible.
Why did puritans fail to win any of their demands at the conference?
- If they suggested major alterations to church government, they would be branded extremists, so they played down their demands, leading James to see their demands as petty and largely ignore them. 2. They wanted to impress the king with the strength of their support, so organized petitioning across the country, this upset james as he saw it as undue pressure.
List three outcomes of the Hampton court conference
- Puritans were not granted any changes to church organization. 2. Parliament made no effort to deal with the impoverishment of the church as they benefited from it. 3. It brought no consolation to puritans who had looked to james for reform.
What were Bancroft’s canons 1604?
A list of 39 articles to which all clergy had to agree, they were seen as popish and reactionary.
What happened in 1610?
Bancroft died and was replaced by the more tolerant George abbot as Archbishop of Canterbury, more puritans were appointed to important church posts.
What happened in 1618?
James reissued the book of sports which listed activities that could be done on a Sunday, this angered the puritans as they held that Sunday should be a day of rest.
What were james’ religious beliefs?
He had always been Calvinist in theology (believed in predestination) even if he disliked its method of church organization .
What did Arminians believe in?
Free will, they rejected predestination, they saw the Catholic Church as the true church and liked more ceremonial services with an emphasis on the sacraments.
