Democratic Party

The belief that the power of the states should be greater than the power of the federal government.
Nullification Crisis
A dispute led by John C. Calhoun that said that states could ignore federal laws if they believed those laws violated the Constitution.

To formally withdraw from the Union or an organization. to leave the union. South Carolina threaten to secede if the government threatened to enforce the tariffs.

Whig Party
A political party formed in 1834 by opponents of Andrew Jackson who supported a strong legislature. Political party formed in 1834 to oppose policies of Andrew Jackson. It favored the idea of a weak president and a strong Congress. The party chose 4 men to run against Van Buren.

What was the Webster-Hayne debate over?
It was a debate about states’ rights. This resulted in constitutional issues. Robert E. Hayne argued that nullification gave states a way to lawfully protest federal legislation. Webster argued that the U.S. was one nation, not a pact among individual states. The well-being of the nation should overrule the individual states.
