evaluation points
– Research to support Harlow rhesus monkeys
– Retrospective data
– Socially sensitive
Research to support Harlow rhesus monkeys
– Harlow separated monkeys from mothers of birth and raise them in cages, so they had no early attachment
– Monkeys found it difficult to form relationships = difficulty mating and females were inadequate mothers
– Supporting early attachment to later attachment as this shows negative attachment earlier on can lead to negative future relationships
Socially sensitive
– Later, childhood and adult relationship success of parenting is due to the persons early attachment
– it blames parents for failed relationships and could have damaging affects
– Therefore Raises ethical Issues, when explaining influence of early attachment on later relationships
retrospective data
– Participants often after think back to early attachment
– This is a weakness, because it relies on individuals memory, which can be inaccurate
– Therefore, lowers internal validity of research into the influence of early attachment or late relationships
