IVF management Flashcards

1
Q

Hypertonic IVF?
Examples?
Use?

A

-shrink cells=fluid moves from ICF to ECF; more solutes in plasma therefore fluid moves to ECF
-3-5% NaCl, 10-50% dextrose
-hyponatremia, SIADH, Diabetic hypoglycemia

Q

Hypotonic IVF?
Examples?
Use?

A

-Swells cells=fluid moves from ECF to ICF, less solutes in plasma therefore fluid moves to ICF
-0.2 NaCl, 0.45 NaCl, 0.33 NaCl
-use only in dehydration secondary to hypernatremia, metabolic acidosis and Diabetic ketoacidosis

Q

Why Isotonic IVF for SCD preop?

A

-hypertonic fluids cause cell shrinkage and dehydration, which leads to increased sickling
-hypotonic fluids can lead to hyponatremia and SIADH
-Isotonic acts to volume expand when patient NPO
