IV Therapy Flashcards
Colloid Fluid
Contains proteins or other high-molecular-weight molecules that tend to remain in the intravascular space for an extended period of time.
Albumin
A protein commonly present in plant and animal tissues. In blood, it works to maintain blood volume, blood pressure, and provides colloid osmotic pressure (oncotic pressure) to prevent plasma loss.
Crystalloids
The primary compounds used in prehospital IV fluid therapy.
Tonicity
Solute concentration or osmotic pressure relative to the blood plasma or body cells.
Where does a hypertonic solution pull fluids from?
It will pull fluids from the interstitial space and intracellular compartment and put it into the intravascular space.
Where does a hypotonic solution pull fluids from?
It will pull fluids from the intravascular space and push it into the interstitial space and intracellular compartment.
Balanced Salt Solutions
(ex. LR); designed so the concentration of electrolytes is very similar to plasma.
