IV Fluids Flashcards
Hypotonic Solutions
Cause the movement of water out of vessels and into the cells (hydrates cells)
Should be administered slowly to prevent cellular edema.
Hypotonic Nursing Considerations
May worsen hypotension
Can increase edema
May cause hyponatremia
Isotonic Solutions
Increase extracellular fluid volume (Vascular Expansion)
Does not cause a fluid shift
Electrolyte replacement
Isotonic Nursing Considerations
May cause fluid overload
generalized edema
Dilutes hemoglobin
may cause electrolyte imbalance
Hypertonic Solutions
Shifts fluid back into the circulation for vascular expansion.
Electrolyte replacement
Hypertonic Nursing Considerations
Irritating to veins
May cause fluid overload, hypernatremia, hyperchloremia
