IUGR Flashcards
What is IUGR?
A condition where the baby is smaller than expected or when growth slows/stops-mainly caused by poor placental function, which can increase risk of death or disability within the neonate. Classified as below the 3rd centile or below the 10th centile with proven placental dysfunction.
What makes IUGR different from SGA?
SGA has normal growth velocity. Above the 3rd centile and below the 10th centile. SGA has proven umbilical function and normal liquor volume
What are risk factors for IUGR?
Low BMI (under20)
Diabetes
35+ maternal age
Alcohol/smoking/drugs
IVF/ poor obstetric history
Anaemia
Exercise
Prev SGA or IUGR
high BMI (over 30)
Maternal/neonatal heart diseases
PIH, PET
What is the cause of IUGR?
Reduction within the placental delivery of amino acids
Blood flow is impaired, with flow to brain, liver and heart altered leading to hypoxia and lactacidaemia, with overall negative impact on growth
