Q

What is the term used to explain why it is hotter in urban areas than it is in rural areas?

A

Urban Heat Island Effect

18
Q

What are the four reasons why it is hotter in urban areas than in rural areas?

A
  • Dark surfaces e.g Tarmac, concrete; absorbs solar radiation.
  • Pollutants; Hold onto the heat.
  • Lack of evaporation; Less plants and water in the Urban areas therefore less evaporation that removes the heat.
  • Large buildings stopping/ reducing/ changing the flow of wind therefore heat is not dispersed.
