It was the construction of a hydro-electricity irrigation complex in South-East Australia that was built between 1849 and 1974.
Why was the Assisted Passage scheme introduced?
To attract European immigrants to come and work in Australia during its booming industrial era.
What was the Assisted Passage scheme?
Australia would pay passage for European immigrants to come to Australia by boat. They were also given a 2 year contract for work.
What was the Family Reunion scheme?
European/Italian immigrants were able to sponsor their own family members and have them come to Australia.
Why was the Family Reunion scheme introduced?
This would mean more workers in Australia. However, there needed to be a job for the new worker or a place to stay.
Who/What were ‘burdens of the State’?
Immigrants who came to Australia without a position for a job or a place to stay.
What was a typical Italian immigrant like? What type of work did they do?
They were usually a male around 23 years old, poor, not well educated and unmarried. They were also usually unemployed and worked as labourers or farmers.
Also illiterate, many only spoke their own dialect.
Explain what the “Atto di Richiamo” is.
It was an Australian law which permitted those who immigrated to request to the government permission to house their relatives in Italy so they could migrate to Australia.
