Italian/ German Unification Flashcards
Mazzini
Republic leader who spreads the word of nationalism around Italy, was active in starting the idea of unification and wanted to turn Italy into a republic
Garibaldi
Italian military man who is similar to Mazzini in wanting a republic, he gathers his army “red shirts” and conquers the south moving north…. He eventually settles on constitutional monarchy
Victor Emmanuel
King of Piedmont and Sardinia and eventually Italy… Let his PM Cavour run the show, just wanted to stay in power
Pope Pius
Pope who really did not want Italy unified and fled/hid after Italy became unified
Bismarck
Like a prime minister, runs the show… Wants to increase the size of Prussia and if it means German unified, so be it. He wanted to raise $ for war and wealthy class didn’t. He was an example of real politik governing… Didn’t care about ethics, religion, etc, just focused on goal.
William I
King of Prussia… Like Victor Emmanuel, willing to let Bismarck run the show
Obstacles to Italian Unification
Austria: they controlled Piedmont
France: controlled parts of central Italy
Political Differences: between Cavour and garibaldi
Cavour

Austria: powerful ‘German state’ w/ different agenda than Prussia
France: Control land that used to belong to Prussia
