Define IT
- task of gathering data and processing it into information
- Ability to disseminate information using technology
- Technology itself that permits these tasks
- Collection of people who are in charge of maintaining the IT infrastructure (computers, networks, operating system)
Generally - Technology used in creating, maintaining and making information accessible.
What are IT people?
Those people whose job it is to supply and support IT. Includes computer engineers who design/build computer chips, computer scientists who write software, and administrators who provide the IT infrastructure for organizations.
What does an Administrator do?
In charge of some portion of the IT infrastructure.
What does a System Administrator do?
Maintains operating system of a computer system.
What does a System Admin. do related to software?
Install software, make it available, troubleshoot problems that arise during usage, make sure software is running efficiently as well as understand the OS well enough to configure software appropriately, create accounts, and safeguard the system from outside attack.
What does a System Admin do related to hardware?
Install new hardware, troubleshoot existing hardware, include repair components, lay network cable. May also require installing device drivers
What does a System Admin do related to Programming?
Fine tuning OS; write shell scripts used by an Administrator to automate a process to accomplish tasks.
What does a Network Administrator do?
In charge of all aspects of the computer network. Lay down physical cable, make connections, work with network hardware (routers and switches). Configure individual machines to communicate with network; troubleshoot network and software; work on firewalls (with System Administrator); edit configuration files, write shell scripts, install software and patches
What does a Database Administrator do?
Focus on design, development and support of database management systems (DBMSs), including installation, maintenance, performance analysis, and troubleshooting.
Who administers the computers in an organization; install software; modify/update operating system; create accounts; train users; secure system; troubleshoot system; add hardware
