Introduction to Computer Systems Flashcards
Define a Computer?
A piece of electronic equipment capable of running programs, interacting with a user (via input-output devices) and storing data.
What 4 essential operations does a computer perform?
Input, Processing, Output, Storage
What is Input?
Data entered into the computer system
What is Processing?
Data is put into a useful organization or structure based on the computer program being used for the task.
What is Output?
Data presented in a format which allows it to be analyzed.
What is Storage?
The computer stores the processed information until a need to access it arises.
What is the acronym IPOS?
Input, Processing, Output, Storage
Define “Computer System” (or System)
Collection of components that work together to meet the needs of the user.
What are the categories within a Computer System?
Hardware and Software, Networks and Users
What are examples of Hardware?
Motherboard, fan, disk drives, CPU, memory chips, keyboard, mouse, printer, monitor, etc.
What is software?
computer programs that tell the computer what to do and how to execute commands and process information. Computers MUST have software in order to be useful and to communicate with users and other computers.
What is a network?
A collection of computers and resources connected via various media so that they can communicate with each other.
What are Users?
Those that use a computer.
Is hardware tangible or intangible?
Tangible
Is software tangible or intangible?
Intangible
